Fissure sealants are a way of preventing decay from starting in the deep grooves and fissures that occur naturally on the biting surfaces of teeth. These surfaces are protected by the application of a tooth coloured resin sealant. The sealant makes the tooth surface smoother and easier to clean and prevents decay from starting. Fissure sealants are especially recommended if decay was present in the baby teeth.
